Intense fruit notes with clarity and elegance
Similar to Yirgacheffe but with more intense fruit notes

Werka is a small but highly regarded coffee-producing village located in the Gedeb district, which borders the famous Yirgacheffe region. Despite its small size, Werka has gained significant recognition in the specialty coffee world for producing exceptional microlots that showcase intense fruit notes while maintaining remarkable clarity and elegance. The village sits at approximately 2,000 meters above sea level, providing ideal conditions for slow cherry maturation and complex flavor development. Werka coffees share some characteristics with Yirgacheffe but are distinguished by their more intense fruit notes and exceptional cup clarity. Both washed and natural processing methods are employed, with each method highlighting different aspects of the coffee's character. The washed coffees tend to emphasize the floral and citrus notes, while the naturals bring out more pronounced fruit flavors. Common tasting notes include intense blueberry, jasmine, various stone fruits, and a distinctive floral tea character. These coffees are often processed as microlots and are highly sought after by boutique roasters who appreciate their exceptional quality, complexity, and elegance. The small-scale production and meticulous attention to detail make Werka coffees some of the most prized in Ethiopia.
